HOLINESS

Greetings in the name of the one who was…and is…and is to come, Jesus Christ!

We are living in a marvelous time to be a fully-devoted follower of Jesus. I believe what the world needs is what we distinctively have to offer…a winsome, attractive, articulate, vibrant faith that not only captures our hearts with the captivating love of God, but also flows out of us in the way we live our lives and love each other as the people of God.

In 1974, Archbishop Fulton Sheen said, “Christians today are witnessing the end of Christendom (the Christian political, economic and social life that should not be confused with Christianity), and must be prepared to face the change, “He said, “The end is evident from today’s paganism, seen in such things as the disregard for life’s sanctity and growing dishonestly.” He said, “Civilizations die about every 500 years as Christendom is doing, and barbarism reigns until a new civilization is born. It’s a passive barbarism today, not the savage kind, and we have to be prepared as Christians to do something about the situation.” He suggested three things:

1. Accept the times as an opportunity; we are challenged by a secular world. That is why these are great days. We have the opportunity to say, “Lord, I am yours. I am willing to stand up and be counted.”

2. Don’t become identified with the world. We are not called to save order as it exists at the present—although it doesn’t mean we are not to be involved in it. But we are separate from it. As Christians, we have a specific way of saving the world.

3. Be a creative minority. We must be so very different from the rest of humanity that they will want to be with us. They’ll see our peace, convictions and joy.”

He concluded, “There is only one effective argument left today: holiness. This modern world has heard and rejected all others.”

What we distinctively have to offer is holiness of heart and life. By holiness, I am not simply talking about a list of “do’s” and “don’ts”…or permissions and prohibitions. I am talking about what Wesley called being made perfect in love. Giving lordship of our lives over to Jesus…receiving forgiveness of sins and release from our love for sin…allowing the life and character of Jesus to be formed in us…and allowing the attractiveness of this gospel of love to flow in every area of our lives. That is what we distinctively have to offer.
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
Tengecha Water Project Potluck by Alice Koech
Thank you so much for your support both financially and in prayers for the Tengecha Water Project. Thank you for contributing during the potluck on 1/30/2011 as well as during Christmas as you gave towards the Well project. Your giving exceeded our expectation. We are truly thankful to you and most of all to God.
During the potluck, we had a chance of tasting some Kenyan food including: Mandazi (fried bread), Samosa (bread stuffed with beef), Chapati (flat bread), Chicken curry in coconut sauce, Ugali (corn meal mash), Pilau (fried spiced rice with carrots and beef), Sukuma wiki (collard greens), and Mokimo (mashed potatoes with peas and corn). Thanks to Maribeth for helping cut some of the food up. We had approximately 65 members attend this event.
We watched a video that Alice made with UMCOR’s help when she went to New York in October. In the video, the need for drinking water is highlighted. We also had the adult drama ministry debut of their skit entitled “Is It Love or Noise”. Wanda Paulsen also gave a presentation on the trip that she and others from our church took to Kenya several years ago. We all enjoyed the evening!
As I shared during the potluck, the project is underway as a new hydrogeological survey has been conducted and now awaiting the report from this survey. Drilling will begin thereafter. The total cost of drilling one well from start to finish (including pump and pump house) is approximately $25,000. So far, we have $15,000.00 plus the money raised from our churches ($1406.50 on 1/30/11 and $1025.00 from December 2010. So far a total of $2431.50 has been sent to UMCOR by our parish). The project committee in the village also wrote a proposal to UMCOR for funding of up to $10,000.00. We are thankful to UMCOR as they have helped in connecting us with other UM churches; who are now interested in supporting the project. The village of Tengecha and 2 other villages close by desperately need clean drinking water. We hope that a total of 3 wells will be drilled. We are starting with one well and as God provides, we hope that the other wells will be drilled as well.
Keep praying for the success of this project and thanks again for your support.
<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<
The Youth Group would like to thank all of those that supported our “Souper” Bowl Luncheon and Pizza Fundraiser. Your support was greatly appreciated!
The Youth Group will be taking a ski trip to Snowy Range on March 11th. If you would like to be an adult sponsor, please contact Karla Criswell.
The United Methodist Junior High Youth Group is meeting on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month in the youth room of the Chappell United Methodist Church. They have made plans for the year and if you would like to be a part of this group please contact Karla Criswell at 308-874-2569 to learn more.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Totals for Conference 2010 Mission Shares
Chappell UMC 22.58% Lodgepole UMC 22.29%
How did we compare to the other districts in the state?
Elkhorn Valley—91.10%; Gateway– 90.58%; Prairie Rivers– 90.06%; Missouri River– 86.34%; Great West -83.37%; Blue River– 82.62%
The Great West District’s churches finished the 2010 year at 99.6% of their goal for District Ministries. However, far too often, we fall short of Jesus’ expectation of “When {not if} you pray…” [3 times in Matthew; once in Luke]. So, what do we do about it? I have assembled a class with this in mind – and am willing to teach it anywhere I can! So what’s involved: We use clay, beads, fabric, etc. for “hands-on” activities; We talk about prayer from Scripture and early writers; We talk about unanswered/answered prayers; We talk about “why” we should pray; We talk about prayer postures and We learn about many tools to help with prayer. You might say this is pretty basic, and it is, that’s the point – it’s for anyone wanting to learn about prayer, and wanting to be encouraged in starting or improving their prayer life! The class takes 3 hours, and all are invited to come, however I wouldn’t recommend youth under confirmation age. As a “prayer starter” for confirmation, this is great – I use it for my own confirmands. I would ask that you as a “host” church do a lot of advertising within your congregation as well as other churches in your town(s) – prayer isn’t denominational, ya know… Would you also be willing to have coffee/tea and some snacks for breaks? Cost for the class is $5 per person (or free-will basket) to cover materials. If you’re intrigued, let’s talk: Pastor Corey Jenkins, 308-360-0953 or crstrnr@gmail.com. If interested there is a sign-up sheet going around so that we can start planning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Prayers are asked for: family and friends of Dr. James E. Thayer at his passing; Vi Bauer, family and friends of Barry Bauer at his passing; Isela Addison; the family and friends of Ada Taylor at her passing; Kathie Stapleton-granddaughter of Bob and Norma Wright; Bob Faustman; Sid Diffendaffer; Sami Baltzell, daughter of Christy (Administrative Assistant to our DS); the family and friends of Virginia Hubbard at her passing; Sharrol Rundquist; Pastor Gary Wilson; Shirley Yanney and her family; Peggy and Greg Gade (daughter-in-law and son of Velma Gade); Vera & Bob Gillham; Colton Riley; Marian Dotson; Margaret Klingman; Chad Meyer, son of Jeff and Dineen Rhodes; L. State the Vision Simply- If the vision is unclear to you, it will never be clear to the people in your organization. Howard Hendrix said, "If it's a mist in the pulpit, it's a fog in the pew."
2. Cast the Vision Convincingly- Every vision is a solution to a problem.
• Define the problem
• Offer the Solution
• Present a Reason
Key: If you haven't defined the problem, determined the solution, and discovered a compelling reason why now is the time to act, you aren't ready to go public with your vision.
3. Repeat the Vision Regularly- To make the vision stick, you need to find ways to build vision casting into the rhythm of your organization.
4. Celebrate the Vision Systematically- To make vision stick, a leader needs to pause long enough to celebrate wins along the way.
Key: What is celebrated is repeated. Celebrations trump motivational speeches every time.
5. Embrace the Vision Personally- when you embody the vision of your organization, people come to believe that your job is more than just a job for you. Over time it occurs to insiders that you would be doing the same thing even if there weren't an organization to support you.
Key: Sharp people will not embrace the vision that is merely a marketing scheme for someone else's personal agenda. I'm tempted to say ‘no one’ will follow a leader who doesn't live his or her vision. But the truth is, people do it all the time. Eventually, they wake up to discover that they've been used and deceived.
If God has given you a picture of what could be and should be, embrace it fully and refuse to allow the busyness and urgency of life to distract you.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Camp Staff Application (Please type or print)
Date of Application:__________
Full Name:
Social Security #:
Permanent Address:
Street
City
State
Zip
Phone: ______
Email:____________________________________________
School or Business Address:
Street
City
State
Zip
Phone: ______
Email:____________________________________________
Which camp are you applying to work at? • Camp Comeca • Camp Fontanelle • Camp Norwesca

Which type of position are you applying for? • Paid Staff Position • Volunteer Position

Dates available for employment: From: To:

What type of position do you want at camp?
